In 1977 Bruce Metzger published a must have book for anyone, taking the New Testament seriously. The Early Versions of the New Testament (their Origin, Transmission and Limitations) deals with all the translations of manuscripts before 1000 A.D. Textual analysis of the earliest surviving manuscripts and careful attention to the characteristics of languages became standard in attempts to recover the underlying material about Jesus and the early Church. The work of such scholars often remains within the academic world.

Metzger's student, Bart D. Ehrman's best selling book once again tells the story of how we got the New Testament. This timely work is aimed toward the public, and so the gown (academic world) hits the town (the best seller's list). I welcome this - because even Ehrman came to abandon his long-held ultraconservative view of the Bible when he discovered the story behind the texts. The book is not for everyone, but if you want to discern reality from fiction (The DaVinci Code), come to the Sunday 9:30am Adult Education Class.
